How Compounding Intellectual Property Can Change Your Life

Creating intellectual property, in my mind, is one of the better ways to build a compounding business. I’m biased of course, because I’m an author, but hear me out anyway.

I’ve never had a New York Times Best Seller. Not even close. Truth be told, I’m a terrible marketer, and I’m not alone. There are probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of independent authors whom you’ve never heard of, but they still make a decent living.

Those that release just one book, chances are they make next to nothing. But every time you release a new piece of work, it compounds. Fans compound, skills compound, and royalties compound.

After a while, even without marketing, you could be making a few extra grand a month, and with all that practice you may have even turned into a decent author.

It's Not Just for Books!

I like books because they don’t go out of fashion and they are cheap to produce.

Movies don’t go out of fashion either. You may not have the resources to produce a film, but if you are accessing this post online then you have everything you need to write a script.

Music is another good example. You don’t have to be the next Taylor Swift. Plenty of people have made a very good living by selling a couple of their jingles for advertisements.

Even YouTube is an epic opportunity. There are a lot of YouTube professionals out there. They all started with nothing, compounded content, and are now reaping the benefits.

You can too!

Compound Consistency

Whatever medium you choose, just get started. You can always swap mediums later if, for example, you decide that you prefer to podcast or write a blog rather than make videos. Just don’t think you need to figure it all out before you start.

The key is to pick something, start creating content, and keep going.

Unless you are the one in a million, which you probably aren’t, you will not get instantly famous. It will probably take years. But if you are persistent, all those posts that you put out will each get one or two new people into your world. Many will leave, but some will stay, because they like you.

Eventually, that number will increase. You will get better at your craft. Slow growth is still growth. And it won’t be a fad. It will be something real.

Then one day, you’ll wake up and realize you can quit your job and travel the world if you want to. That 30-minutes a day you spent consistently compounding intellectual property turned into residual income.

You dug your well, and now you can drink.
