I like to think of myself as a relatively positive person, but, like most people, I get negative feelings every now and again.

For me, and likely for most people, this happens more often when I’m tired, hungry, or stressed.

It seems to me that some people are in a near-constant state of negativity. They complain about everything and anyone. Some people just love to complain.

Honestly, I think that is fine. Everyone is entitled to their view of the world. But I wouldn’t want to live my life like that. I believe the constant negativity has negative effects on health.

People that always see the negative have more pent-up anger and frustration. Everyone knows those people who get breakouts of acne when they're stressed. Magnify that and angry people end up being more susceptible to chronic disease.

Of course, I have no scientific basis for this other than observations and anecdotes.

So what can you do about it?

You need to practice acceptance on several levels.

The first is to accept your feelings. It’s fine to feel all emotions. In fact, I believe it’s healthy to have and express all that you feel, both positive and negative. Just don't dwell on the negative ones. Acknowledge your feelings, take a deep breath, and let it go.

The second is to accept the actions of others. One mantra I try to live by is to “live and let live.” Whatever anyone does or says doesn’t really matter as long as it won’t do you or your loved ones serious harm.

Even things that do you a little harm are not worth getting angry about. Unless the action will greatly impact your future, who cares? Most people get over most things quicker than you imagine.

And the third is to accept when things go wrong. Instead of throwing a hissy-fit, look for a solution. Problem-solving in life is fun. Learn to laugh at mishaps and see negative experiences for what they are— mere glitches in an otherwise happy life.
