Whenever people ask me about traveling in India, I tell them to go to Sri Lanka instead.

I’m not saying that Sri Lanka is India. It’s not. But it is pretty similar culturally. And traveling in Sri Lanka, in my opinion, is way better than India.

Anuradhapura Ruwanweli Stupa

This is the Anuradhapura Ruwanweli Stupa. I’m not sure how things operate nowadays, 9 years later, but this doesn’t strike me as the safest way to clean a religious structure, or any type of structure for that matter.

Anyway, apparently this is the world's tallest ancient monument and holds the largest collection of Buddha's relics anywhere in the world.

Gangaramaya Temple

The Gangaramaya Temple is in the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo, and inside it are a lot of Buddha statues.

Unfortunately, I also saw people taking pictures with a chained up elephant, which was extremely surprising (and sad) considering it is a Buddhist temple.

Cricket Match Galle Fort

From the top of Galle Fort I saw a cricket match. Actually, I saw many cricket matches in Sri Lanka. Not surprising really. They do love cricket.

Kalutara

The beach in Kalutara has this reddish tinge in the sand. That’s about all I can remember of it apart from the cute little homestay I stayed in. The old lady fed me traditional Sri Lankan food, including my favorite, kothu roti.

Little Adams Peak

This photo is a view of Little Adam’s Peak. I remember hiking up the hill in my barefoot sandals. I probably should’ve worn shoes, but I made it.

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens

I’m a sucker for botanical gardens. This is the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens in the city of Kandy.

Train to Ella

I caught the train to Ella. Trains are probably one of my favorite ways to travel, except in China. I think this is a photo of tea fields, though it’s highly possible I’m wrong about that. There were a lot of good views in any case.

Sri Lankan Fashion

I can’t remember where this photo was taken, but it is one of my favorites from this trip. I hope their fashion never gets “westernized.”

I have fond memories of Sri Lanka and I feel that I saw a lot of the country in a relatively short amount of time.

Definately worth a visit if you've never been.
