Thailand is often referred to as “The Land of Smiles.”
And after being in Eastern Europe for the last couple of months, I’ve realized that a culture of smiling people, or more so, a culture where people don’t smile, affects me. It’s actually one of the reasons I want to move back to the Philippines.
Anyway, I’ve visited Thailand a couple of times. It's a great place to explore once you get out of the city. The food is amazing and there is a lot of natural beauty.
The Arts of the Kingdom Museum is in Bangkok. I honestly can’t remember what the inside of it was like.
You’ll notice all these photos have a Survive Travel logo on them. Survive Travel was my travel blog. I never made much money from it and honestly, having to write articles on everywhere I went sucked the fun out of travel.
I ended up selling it for a couple of grand. Whoever bought it did nothing with it.
I remember watching the movie “The Bridge on the River Kwai” when I was a kid. I liked it, and I’m pretty sure this is that actual bridge. In the movie they blow it up, but I’m guessing they’ve rebuilt it since the war.
Erawan National Park is the home of the Erawan Waterfalls, of which there are several. I’m a big fan of waterfalls.
Hellfire Pass, otherwise known as the Thai-Burma death railway, was built by prisoners of war during World War II.
Back then I was an Australian Army Reserve and had heard stories about the Hellfire Pass. Actually walking through it and reading all the stories was very interesting to me at the time.
In 2015 I visited Patong Beach with some friends from camp. It was basically a beach holiday. I had a great time and we are all still very good friends.
In 2016 I went with different friends, also from camp, to one of the Phi Phi Islands, which I think is famous for being in a James Bond film, or possibly the movie “The Beach.”
Anyway, it was a classic party island. Not really my thing, even back then, but there was some decent snorkeling and it is always great to catch up with old friends.
Thailand is one of those places that I’d definitely visit again but would never want to live there. It has all the great things I love about Southeast Asia. Good food, warm weather, friendly people, and more.
What stops me from living there are visa restrictions and a really hard-to-master local language.
