Turkey is one of my favorite countries, even though I have only been there twice.

The first time was as a long layover in Istanbul. Turkish Airlines offered a free day tour if the layover was over 8 hours during the day, however, as an Australian I had to pay $70 for the visa to enter.

It was a pretty decent tour which even included lunch. This was back in 2014 so I'm not sure they still do it.

The second time was during COVID. When the world started shutting down I got “stuck" in Kenya. After about six months they started kicking people who had overstayed their tourist visas out. Turkey was one of the few countries in the area that was letting people in with no restrictions, so I went to live in Alanya for as long as a tourist visa allowed, which was three months.

Basilica Cistern

This is the Basilica Cistern. It’s a terrible photo but I didn’t have many to choose from.

The Basilica Cistern is an ancient engineering marvel. It is the largest of many ancient cisterns that lie beneath Istanbul.

Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque is famous for its architectural beauty and significance to the Ottoman Empire. Inside there are thousands of handmade blue tiles.

Airpot During COVID

I passed through several airports during COVID. It was surreal to be in a place that is usually super populated but was pretty much empty.

Beach in Alanya, Turkey

This is Alanya Beach, or at least it is a beach in Alanya.

View from Alanya Castle

Here is a view of Alanya from the Alanya Castle. Unfortunately I don't seem to have a photo of the actual castle.

It’s funny that Turkey is one of my favorite countries, even though both times I have been there were kind of forced. I’m not sure why it is one of my favorites. Probably the food and cheap cost of living.
