I’ve been to Vietnam twice.

The first time was in 2014. I recall getting my visa from the Vietnamese embassy in China, perhaps it was from Kunming. I also remember nearly pooping my pants on the bus over the border. I had to beg the driver to stop at the next gas station and I made it just in time.

The second time I went with my mum so she could get some dental work done. I’m a big believer in medical tourism. For less than it would have cost to do the work in Australia, my mum was able to fly to Vietnam, get dental treatment, then spend about a week exploring Vietnam.

All these photos, however, are from my first trip.

Civit Poo Coffee

Amongst other things, Vietnam is famous for coffee. This is a photo of sleeping civets. They eat the coffee beans then poop them out.

Apparently, civet poop coffee is considered a delicacy. I wasn’t much of a coffee drinker back then so I didn’t try it.

Dalat

While in Dalat I went on a motorbike tour which was sold to me as I got off the bus. I’m not a massive fan of tours, but this was a solo tour. Just me on the back of the bike with the guide. This photo is just one of the many scenic views from that tour.

Hellcat, Hanoi

This photo is a Hellcat plane wreckage taken at the Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi. There is a lot to see for war history buffs in Vietnam. It was a very hard history for the Vietnamese.

Hue

Here is a typical back street in Hue. I love walking backstreets - but only during the day in areas I feel safe.

Nha Trang

There are statues of Buddha and temples galore in Vietnam. This bell is in Nha Trang on the stairway to see a big Buddha statue. You stick your head in it and then a monk dongs it. I'm not sure how to describe the experience, but if you get the chance, do it.

Saigon

I believe this is us floating down the Mekong river, or perhaps a channel connecting to it. It was part of a tour to the Cu Chi tunnels.

Sa Pa

This girl guided me through the countryside in Sa Pa. I can’t remember her name or how we met, but she basically just walked me back to her village and told me about her life and the area along the way. It was my favorite memory from Vietnam.

I’m not sure if I’d ever go back to Vietnam. I loved the countryside and the food was amazing. The only thing that really turned me off was the pushiness of the sellers in the cities, but that isn’t unique to Vietnam.

Overall, I enjoyed the trip.
