This post is going to be a little different than normal. You are going to see actual pictures instead of just words on the screen.

Specifically, a few scenic photos from Santa Marta, Colombia, accompanied by some short commentary explaining what you are looking at.

Kind of like in the old days where you’d sit around and watch the slideshow of your relatives' vacation.

But first, a short introduction.

I’ve been to Colombia a few times and have traveled a fair bit of it. My favorite place by far is Santa Marta. It has heat, the beach, pretty girls, a friendly expat community, a chill vibe, and all the modern amenities a privileged foreigner is used to.

In fact, I liked it so much that I decided to sign a six-month lease to test out living there!

It is the longest time I have spent in a single place since teaching English in China, which I think was back in 2016.

Honestly, I wanted to bail after 3 months but had signed the lease and didn’t want to fuck them over. It was a good experiment though. It reminded me why I’m a nomad. I get itchy feet after about 3 months of being anywhere.

Anyway, here are the photos.

1 Rodadero

This is Rodadero, which I guess is akin to a suburb of Santa Marta. It is where I lived. It’s a pretty good area. It’s quite lively while also having a few quieter beaches and some short hiking trails close by.

2 Taganga

The first time I lived in Santa Marta, which was actually back in 2016, I lived in a fishing village called Taganga. This is it. It’s changed a fair bit since my first visit. Now it is much more of a tourist destination.

3 Sunset

Santa Marta has some amazing sunsets. The only place I’ve seen them better is in Western Australia. This photo was not taken by me.

4 Tayrona

For some reason I didn’t take any photos of Tayrona this time around, so I dug this up from 2016. I went there this time with some friends. It was a pleasant 2 hour hike in, some nice snorkeling, and an adventurous motor-boat ride out.

4 Tayrona

This is one of the waterfalls in Minca, which is less than an hour away from Santa Marta. Honestly, as far as waterfalls go this is average at best, but was a nice day trip all the same.

4 Tayrona

Shakira is probably the most famous Colombian in the world and they recently erected this statue in her hometown, Barranquilla, which is about a 2 hour bus ride from Santa Marta.

While in Baranquilla we also went to the Carnival Museum which I recommend.
