“No one on their deathbed ever wished they had spent more time at work.”

I take this to mean that how you spend your time is more important than how you spend your money.

In chapter seven of “Your Money or Your Life,” you dive deeper into this subject, the subject of how you spend your valuable “life energy.”

What is Work?

When most people hear the word ‘work’, they equate it to what they do to earn money.

It’s time to change that paradigm.

The goal is to redefine the word “work” in your mind so you view it as something more aligned with values, as well as a way to put food on the table.

Reflect on the following:

1. Why do you do what you do to earn money?

2. What motivates you to get out of bed every day to earn money?

3. What is the purpose, in your experience, of your paid employment?

There are many reasons to go to work besides earning money, such as security, tradition, socializing, to learn new skills, status, and so on.

The funny thing is that all reasons to go to work, other than earning money, can be fulfilled by unpaid activities—activities you would probably enjoy a lot more.

In fact, the purpose of your paid employment is solely to get paid, and your “real work” may be far bigger than your paid job.

What’s the Point?

By breaking the link between work and money, your values and self-worth become your bottom line. The word “work,” then, is redefined as whatever you do in alignment with your life purpose.

Also, by not expecting to get paid for the work you love, you can do both things more honestly. You can earn money to take care of what you need, and still do what makes you happy without giving anything up.

Your Task

Now that we’ve established that the primary purpose of paid employment is earning money, and that your life extends beyond your job, it’s logical to aim for the highest possible income without sacrificing your health or values.

You need to increase your hourly income so you can reach your “enough” amount in fewer hours. That way, you will have more time to do the things you really want to do in life.

Remember, “enough” is not how much you need for survival. It is the amount that gives you fulfillment without excess.

There are several ways to do this, such as changing jobs, getting a pay rise at your current job, or starting a side business.
